PALM SPRINGS

NEW DWELLING

A collaboration with atlasarchitects.com.au

Mid-20th Century Palm Springs design boasts some of the best collections of modernist architecture in the world. Many of these buildings share design qualities in response to the bright and arid climate, design aesthetic that is timeless.

The clients of this project were so excited to continue the theme of a Palm Springs home they enlisted the help of HE Consulting in collaboration with Atlas Architecture to make their vision come to life. The clients had an idea of simple forms but a hardworking material palette to make its significance immediately evident. The combination of material, form and architectural expression come together in a single level design which proves less really is more.

The floor plan is designed in a clever way, so sections of the home can be closed off and opened up depending on the number of occupants, making cleaning, heating and cooling efficient. It was important to connect elements of the landscape to the interior, blurring the distinction between interior and exterior spaces to allow for the home to be comfortable all year around.

Environmental sustainability is addressed through a number of strategies to increase heating and cooling optimisation. Windows, doors and glazing solutions have been designed to provide plenty of light. This is a very site-specific design, along with a brief that offered a rare opportunity to explore architectural form and future proof for the next chapter in the client lives. Hannah believes it may seem like an obvious statement to make in the design and architectural world, but it is rare to have this level of collaboration, support and common vision toward a single idea.
